The study programme of the Jutland Art Academy is an advanced programme within contemporay art. The education consists of  5 years full time study. After your final year and graduation show you will receive a diploma as an artist in visual art. The study programme aims at providing you with the best qualifications to enable you to work as a professional artist.

The study programme is prepared in the way that your individuel artistic development is considered in the best possible way. This is possible, as all instruction and lessons in all techniques are available to you as a student throughout the 5 years. The study programme starts with a basic term lead by a senior lecturer. This term is obligatory.

After this compulsory term you structure the following terms as per your own choice and preferences. Your student adviser will guide you. As a student  you must take an active part in a number of  lectures and compulsory teaching such as technical courses, art history and theory. You must work with developing your artistic expression.

To achieve a maximum benefit from the study programme you must be able to work independently and to take an active part in the  collabourations and activities, in which the academy is involved.

Structure
The study programme is divided into a 3-year basic training and a 2-year advanced programme. The first part of the basic training is obligatory.

Basic term
Guided by a senior lecturer, this basic term will provide you with an insight into the variety of modes of expression, strategies and and their social inportance and history in contemporary art.
Through a number of lectures during this basic term, you will meet the academy’s senior lecturers. Furthermore, a compulsory workshop for 1st year students is arranged by the 4th year students.

3-year Basic Training
The basic term is part of the 3-year basic training.
The basic training is completed by an evaluation in the 3rd year.

This basic training programme aims at giving you a fundamental understanding of  artistic questions,  effects, working methods and processes – all characterized by taking place in constant interaction between an intuitive and critical approach to the subject, combining thoughts and sense perception.

During your basic training the study programme will vary between your own independant work with art and the variety of subjects which the academy arranges, such as lectures, readings, workshop, technical courses and study groups. Your study programme is arranged in co-operation with your student adviser.

3rd-year project evaluation
After 3 years of study, i.e. ending your 3 years of basic training, you may be allowed to continue on the 2 year advanced programme. However, this is only possible if the project assigned by the academy is completed successfully. The evaluation is lead by 2 senior lecturers, one of whom has specified the project. The evaluation shows either a pass or fail. When passed you are ready to begin the advanced programme.

Art Theory and History
To understand the historic background of contemporary art, it is obligatory that you attend courses, prepared and arranged by the academy’s art historian/-theorist.

To strengthen interdisciplinarity it is the academy’s intentsion to have one lecturer with a different  background, e.g. a writer, attached to the academy.  Thus you will be presented to related areas and its artists, working methods, history and theory. During your basic programme it is obligatory that you attend at least one interdisciplinary course.

Advanced programme

A graduation course of  one term is part of your advanced programme. A graduation show will complete your advanced programme.

The advanced programme will enable you to analyse, arrange and address independent answers to complex artistic problems and to express and communicate these.

During the advanced programme your study will vary between  your own independent artistic work and the various courses which the academy arranges. For example lectures, readings, workshops, technical courses and study groups.  You arrange your own study programme in close co-operation with your student adviser.

Final year and Graduation show
Your final year is completed with a term concentrating on your graduation. During this term you formulate your own independent graduation project, assisted by both an external as well as an internal student adviser.

A committee consisting of the Rector, 2 of the academy’s regular lecturers and 1 external censor will examine every graduation project together with the final year students.

The projects are exhibited at the Jutland Art Academy’s annual Exhibition Show, which takes place e.g. in Aarhus Kunstbygning (the Aarhus Art Building)

Diploma
The Jutland Art Academy will issue a diploma which states your completion as an
Artist in Visual Art, examined by the Jutland Art Academy.
